Which format do I need for a product video?

The choice between 9:16, 1:1 and 16:9 isn’t a question of style but of platform logic. This guide shows which format performs best where — and when you need several renders.

TL;DR
  • 9:16 for TikTok, Instagram reels, Stories, YouTube Shorts.
  • 1:1 for marketplace galleries (eBay, Shopify, Etsy, Amazon secondary slots).
  • 16:9 for YouTube, embeds on your own landing pages, Amazon A+ Content.
  • Playing multi-platform: have all three formats rendered — Buust does it in a single run.

Why there is no single “right” format

Marketplaces usually show videos in 1:1, social apps in 9:16, your own landing pages in 16:9. Render only one variant and you give away either visibility (letterboxing on social) or conversion (cropping on marketplaces).

Recommendation per use case

Buust renders all three variants per product in parallel — you pick the right one per channel. Your render budget doesn’t go up, because the same source is just computed three times with a different composition.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I just crop a 9:16 video for 1:1?+

In theory yes, but then the top/bottom edges are gone and text overlays are often cut off. Better: native rendering per format.
